How you will learn

A variety of learning methods

All my courses are straightforward and easy to use. Yes, some topics are complex, but I explain concepts simply and clearly and this course is chunked into small, manageable sections.

The learning tools include videos, an e-book (Grammar Guide), information sheets, activity sheets and quizzes.

Although this course is self-paced, you are welcome to email me for help or more information.

A variety of learning methods

What you'll learn

  • Grammar terms

The first part of this course looks at grammar terms. You need these terms to understand grammar principles. You also receive a grammar guide and glosssary you can download for future reference.

  • Common grammar mistakes

This online grammar course covers grammar issues that cause people the most grief in business writing.

We take a look at the active and passive voice and when to use it, subject-verb agreement, the need for parallel structures and pronoun problems, e.g. when to use I, me or myself.

The course even includes apostrophes as you need to understand why you don't need an apostrophe when a word is already possessive, e.g. its claws.

  • Grammar changes

Learning grammar would be much simpler if language didn't change over time and everyone agreed with the 'rules'.

You'll learn what 'rules' you might have learned at school are not real rules. For instance, there is nothing grammatically wrong with starting a sentence with And.

You'll also learn about grey areas, where language rules may or may not be changing depending on your point of view. In these cases, I will explain the traditional view and also give you the more modern take.

Mary Morel

Your instructor

My aim in developing this course is to help you enjoy and appreciate language. The more you know, the richer your experience of language will be.

I studied grammar at university, but most of my knowledge has come from teaching business writing for several years and answering people's grammar questions in my monthly e-newsletter.

Although this course is self-paced, you are welcome to email me your grammar queries at any time. I always respond.

I'm a New Zealander living at Bondi Beach in Sydney. When I'm not writing or teaching, I enjoy walking the beach, looking at my garden (and thinking I should pull out some weeds) and reading.

FAQs

  • This course is written in Australian English. Is this course suitable for people who use American English?

Grammar rules are universal. Where there are minor differences, I point them out. A few words are spelt a bit differently, but that's easy to ignore (e.g. organise, instead of organize).

  • Do I receive instant access on payment?

Yes, you receive instant access when you pay online. If you would prefer to pay by direct debit, email me (details below) and I'll send you an invoice.
